HeyGen vs Elai 2026: Avatars, Languages, Pricing and LMS Compared

Quick Answer

We don't name a winner here, and one dimension we could not determine at all. Both start at nearly the same price ($23–24/month on annual billing). HeyGen publishes the broader language set — 175+ with lip-sync recomputation, against Elai's 75+ delivered by text-to-speech. Elai publishes a slide-based editor with PowerPoint import that HeyGen does not document. On training and LMS features we could not settle it: both vendors document SCORM, quizzes and branching video, but Elai publishes its gating tier (Enterprise) and HeyGen doesn't publish which plan unlocks its own. HeyGen vs Elai: Overview

HeyGen and Elai are both AI avatar video platforms that turn text into presenter-led video without a camera or actor. They overlap on surface features — avatars, voiceovers, templates — but they are optimised for different production contexts.

HeyGen is built for marketers and content creators. Avatar V delivers the highest avatar realism we have tested, with micro-expressions and natural movement that hold up next to real footage. The platform handles 175+ languages with lip-sync, making it the go-to for brands that need the same video in multiple markets. Full HeyGen review →

Elai is built for L&D teams and instructional designers. The slide-based editor imports PowerPoint decks directly and publishes SCORM packages compatible with Moodle, TalentLMS, Cornerstone, and Docebo. The slide-first workflow is the part HeyGen does not match; on SCORM itself HeyGen documents the same capability, so read the training section below before treating LMS support as a reason to pick either one. Interactive quizzes and branching scenarios let learners make choices inside the video. Full Elai review →

The decision is almost always clear once you identify your primary use case. The exceptions are teams that do both marketing and training — below we map out those scenarios. Avatar Quality

Avatar quality is where the gap between these two tools is most visible.

HeyGen's Avatar V is the most expressive AI avatar available on a commercial platform as of May 2026. Natural head tilts, blinking cadence, micro-expressions between sentences, and subtle hand gestures are all present without any configuration. For a viewer watching a marketing video or a personalised sales email, the avatar reads as genuinely lifelike. This is HeyGen's most defensible competitive advantage. We have not run Elai or Synthesia hands-on, so we don't rank them against it on realism.

Elai's avatars are professional and appropriate for corporate contexts, but they are less expressive. The emphasis is on consistency and neutrality — qualities that work well for training content where the learner focuses on the information, not the presenter. Elai recently added Selfie Avatars (photo-based) and Studio Avatars (green-screen recorded), with the Studio option giving the best output quality. Custom avatars are sold as paid add-ons (Selfie Avatar $199/year, Studio Avatar $500/year); Team includes 1 Selfie Avatar.

For teams deciding on avatar quality alone: HeyGen is the clear choice for any external-facing content. For internal training where presenter neutrality is fine, Elai's stock avatars are adequate.

Editor and Templates

HeyGen uses a timeline-based video editor. You paste a script, choose an avatar and background, and the platform builds a video scene. Multiple scenes can be sequenced on a timeline. The editor supports text overlays, images, B-roll from a stock library, and uploaded footage. It is optimised for short-to-medium marketing and social content (under 10 minutes).

Elai uses a slide-based editor modelled on presentation software. Each slide is a video scene. You can import a PowerPoint deck and Elai will map slides to scenes automatically, with the AI generating voiceover from your slide notes. This matters enormously for L&D teams: most training content is written in PowerPoint, and Elai's import feature cuts production time significantly. There are 150+ templates for common training formats — onboarding, compliance, product training.

Both have a learning curve of roughly 20-30 minutes to produce a first decent video. HeyGen's template library is larger (300+ vs 150+), but Elai's templates are more relevant for training scenarios.

Training and LMS Features

Both vendors document training features. Here is what each publishes, and where we ran out of evidence.

Elai's training features include:

HeyGen's training features. HeyGen documents SCORM export (versions 1.2 and 2004), xAPI, and interactive quizzes and branching video inside SCORM packages on its SCORM academy page, checked 2026-08-26; it does not state the required plan tier there. Its documentation also covers LMS embedding and sending learning data to a Learning Record Store. HeyGen doesn't publish which plan unlocks SCORM, so we won't guess which tool is the cheaper route to it.

For enterprise L&D teams comparing the SCORM landscape: Elai gates SCORM export behind Enterprise, exactly as Synthesia does (verified on elai.io 2026-08-26). If SCORM is the requirement, both tools require an Enterprise contract.

Language Support

HeyGen: 175+ languages with lip-sync. When you translate a video in HeyGen, the avatar's mouth movements are recomputed to match the target language's phonetics, and the original speaker's voice is preserved via voice cloning. The result is a translated video where the avatar appears to be speaking naturally in the new language. This is the standard for international marketing campaigns.

Elai: 75+ languages via TTS, voice cloning in 28 languages. Translation produces a narrated video where an AI voice delivers the translated script. The avatar's lip movements are not updated to match the target language — they remain calibrated for the source. For training content viewed by internal teams, this level of localization is usually acceptable. For consumer-facing content, the visual mismatch is noticeable.

If you need to take a 3-minute product walkthrough from English to Spanish, French, German, and Japanese simultaneously, HeyGen's translation output is more polished. For localizing internal SOPs or onboarding videos, Elai's narration-based translation gets the job done at lower cost.

Pricing Comparison

Plan HeyGen Elai
Free 3 videos/month (3 min, watermark) 1 min/month
Entry Paid (annual) Creator: $24/month Creator: $23/month annual
Mid-tier (annual) Creator: $67/month Team: $100/month annual
API Access Business: $149/month Team: $100/month annual
Enterprise Custom (SSO, SLA) Custom (SSO, SLA, white-label)
Annual saving ~25% vs monthly ~20% vs monthly

At entry level, both tools cost roughly the same. The difference appears at mid-tier: Elai Team ($100/month annual) adds collaboration seats, 1080p and 4K export, 1 Selfie Avatar and 1 Voice Clone. API access starts on Elai's Creator plan. SCORM requires Enterprise on Elai.

HeyGen's Creator plan at $67/month is a better deal for marketing-focused teams who need unlimited video generation, custom avatars, and translation — features Elai's mid-tier does not match on volume or avatar realism.

How To Choose

These tools share an entry price point, which makes the comparison natural. We are not naming a winner, because the evidence doesn't support one.

Where the published evidence does separate them. HeyGen lists 175+ languages and recomputes avatar lip movement for the target language. Elai lists 75+ languages delivered by text-to-speech, with lip movement left calibrated to the source. If you localise for external audiences, that difference is visible on screen. Elai publishes a slide-based editor with PowerPoint import; HeyGen documents no equivalent, so if your source material is decks, that difference is real too.

Where we could not determine it, and why. Training and LMS was the dimension this page used to decide on, and it no longer supports a decision. Both vendors document SCORM export, interactive quizzes and branching video. Elai publishes its gating tier — Enterprise, above the $100/month annual Team plan, which itself covers 1080p and 4K output, collaboration seats and a Selfie Avatar, with the public API starting on Creator. HeyGen documents the same capabilities on its SCORM academy page but does not publish which plan unlocks them. Without that tier we cannot say which is cheaper or more accessible for LMS work, and we would rather tell you that than guess. If you need SCORM, price both directly with the vendors.

Both run free trials. On a dimension we could not settle from published sources, your own trial against your actual material beats our guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HeyGen better than Elai?

We don't name a winner. HeyGen publishes the broader language set (175+ with lip-sync recomputation, against Elai's 75+ via text-to-speech); Elai publishes a slide-based editor with PowerPoint import that HeyGen does not document. On training and LMS features we could not determine a winner: both vendors document SCORM, quizzes and branching video, but Elai publishes its gating tier (Enterprise) and HeyGen does not publish which plan unlocks its own. Entry prices are near-identical at $23–24/month on annual billing.

Does Elai support SCORM export?

Yes, but on its Enterprise plan only (verified on elai.io 2026-08-26), making it compatible with Moodle, TalentLMS, Cornerstone, and Docebo. HeyGen documents SCORM export (versions 1.2 and 2004), xAPI, and interactive quizzes and branching video inside SCORM packages on its SCORM academy page, checked 2026-08-26; it does not state the required plan tier there.

Which is cheaper, HeyGen or Elai?

At entry level they are nearly identical: HeyGen Creator $24/month (annual) vs Elai Creator $23/month (annual). At mid-tier, HeyGen Creator is $67/month vs Elai Team $100/month annual. Elai's public API starts on Creator, which HeyGen doesn't offer until $149/month; SCORM requires Enterprise on Elai.

Can I create a custom avatar on both platforms?

HeyGen includes custom avatar creation on its Creator plan ($24/month). Elai sells custom avatars as paid add-ons (Selfie Avatar $199/year, Studio Avatar $500/year). HeyGen's entry-level custom avatar access is a meaningful cost advantage for teams that need a personal avatar without heavy training content requirements.

Which tool has better language support?

HeyGen supports 175+ languages with lip-synced translation. Elai supports 75+ languages via TTS narration with voice cloning in 28 languages. For global marketing, HeyGen's lip-sync is significantly better. For internal training localization, Elai's 75 languages are usually sufficient.

Does HeyGen have interactive video features?

Both vendors document them. HeyGen documents interactive quizzes and branching video inside SCORM packages on its SCORM academy page (checked 2026-08-26), without stating which plan tier unlocks them. Elai documents quizzes and Avatar Dialogs branching on its paid plans. We have not tested either, so we don't rank them.
